He had already decided, before he noticed that he had done so, that he would take the longer route, although there was no practical reason to avoid the street he usually passed through at that hour.
The difference, if it could be called that, lay not in the distance but in the timing: the alternative path delayed his arrival by just enough to coincide with a moment that could not be anticipated with any certainty, yet had begun to feel, over time, ①less like chance than repetition.
It would have been easier to deny this pattern, to attribute it to habit or convenience, had there not been the occasional disruption — a day when she did not appear, or appeared too early, or passed without noticing him at all.
On such occasions, the route lost its function, becoming indistinguishable from any other, which only served to make the next attempt more deliberate.
He did not approach her. That had never been the point.
What mattered was the arrangement of movement: the distance that could be reduced without being acknowledged, the alignment of direction that could be maintained without appearing intentional.
Once, when the timing failed and they crossed paths more directly than expected, he found himself unable to adjust, as though the possibility of recognition, however slight, would have required him to abandon the structure he had been maintaining.
