She noticed him only after she had already begun to adjust her route, which made it difficult to determine whether the change had been prompted by his presence or had merely created the condition under which she became aware of it.
At that hour, the street offered more than one way to proceed, and although none of them differed significantly in distance, she found herself selecting one that required a slight delay — not enough to be remarked upon, but sufficient to alter the moment at which she would reach the corner.
He was not always there. That mattered.
On the days when he did not appear, the choice of route felt unnecessary, even arbitrary, as though it had been made in reference to something that had not, in fact, occurred.
Yet when he was present, the adjustment seemed justified, not because it ensured an encounter, but because it allowed for a possibility that did not have to be acknowledged in order to be maintained.
She had no intention of speaking to him. The arrangement depended on that.
Distance could be reduced only so far; beyond a certain point, any further approach would require explanation, and explanation would bring with it a clarity that the situation did not demand.
Once, when their paths aligned more directly than expected, she found herself slowing down, not to avoid him, but to prevent the moment from becoming fixed in a way that would not permit repetition.
It was easier, she realized, to preserve the pattern by allowing it to remain incomplete, than to confirm it and risk losing the conditions under which it had been sustained.
